GOOD PROJECT
GOOD process and activities since 1990 GOOD started in 1990 during a gathering of gender advisors from European development and humanitarian aid agencies, which work together with the World Council of Churches. GOOD was based on a shared understanding of the importance of transforming development models. GOOD’s role was to help the APRODEV agencies put policy into practice by learning from each other.
The GOOD process was steered by the by then established GOOD Core Group. In 1994, a first GOOD Coordinator was appointed, and a GOOD office was opened in London, with Christian Aid as the host agency and Church of Sweden Aid as the lead agency. In 1996, a new GOOD Coordinator was appointed, and ICCO in the Netherlands took over as the lead and hosting agency. During Phase I (1994-1996) and Phase II (1996-1999), GOOD concentrated on putting gender on the agenda of the ecumenical agencies. The main objectives were to raise gender awareness, to develop relevant training frameworks, to equip women or gender desks for their tasks, and to facilitate the empowerment and strengthening of women’s groups. A series of occasional papers called ‘GOOD Ideas’ were published. And GOOD members attended the Beijing NGO Forum organized around the UN Women’s Conference in 1995.
In April 2000, GOOD was incorporated into the APRODEV Secretariat with which a new, Phase III (2000-2003), started. The GOOD Working Group was renamed and is now called the Gender Reference Group. Its task is to include a gender perspective in the lobbying work of the APRODEV Secretariat on development related policies. To this end, the Gender Reference Group works in close cooperation with APRODEV's Policy and Advocacy Group.
