PICA monitors EU policies for Central America and tries to influence the EU to ensure its policies and programmes contribute to sustainable development in the region.
To achieve this, PICA:
- Provides information regarding EU policies to partner organizations and other interested organizations in Central America .
- Advocates for the EU to be more open and to allow more civil society participation in its policy making process.
- Advocates for EU policies that clearly put into practice the EU’s core values related to democracy, human rights, transparency and good governance. PICA also urges the EU to use its influence to make the Central American governments put these values into practice as well.
- Advocates that it is not only cooperation policies which will contribute to equitable and sustainable development, but that trade policies are also critical.
- Monitors the negotiations of the EU’s Association Agreement with Central America in order to evaluate its implications for development and poverty reduction and advocates specifically around the negotiations of the Association Agreement given the special concerns it raises.
- Insists on the formulation of trade policies that contribute to the reduction of poverty, inequality and exclusion in Central America.
- Works with Central American civil society organizations to channel their concerns regarding the substance of EU policies to the relevant EU institution.
PICA works on these issues in coordination with other civil society organizations in Europe and Central America . PICA directs its advocacy proposals to the European Institutions as well as to the governments and parliaments of Member States.
